Europa Worldwide Group: Eurotunnel saves CO2

The logistics company is one of the largest commercial users of the Eurotunnel. Compared to ferry transport, this significantly reduces CO2 emissions. How else is Europa Worldwide sustainable on the road?

October 2025 – At one of the largest independently managed transport and logistics companies in the UK, a passion for logistics also extends to sustainability. For Tom Jenkins, Central Services Director at SAE member Europa Worldwide Group, the 50.5-kilometer tunnel connection under the English Channel, linking the UK with continental Europe, is one of the important measures the company is taking to reduce CO2 emissions. Europa Worldwide carries out around 2,600 truck journeys per month – more than 30,000 per year – by rail with LeShuttle Freight. A truck crossing the English Channel by rail causes 12 times less CO2 emissions than a ferry.

What significance does sustainability have today for the logistics of Europa Worldwide?
Tom Jenkins: Sustainability is a strategic priority for Europa Worldwide. As a leading logistics and transport provider, we recognise the environmental impact of our operations and are committed to reducing it. From fleet innovation to energy-efficient infrastructure, our sustainability efforts are designed to meet the evolving expectations of our customers, regulators, and communities. We’ve invested in real-time fleet telematics, Scope 3 emissions reporting, and alternative fuels to ensure our logistics solutions are both efficient and environmentally responsible.

What goals do you want to achieve with your commitment to sustainability?
Our goals are clear:

  • Reduce carbon emissions across all transport modes.
  • Transition to low-emission and electric vehicles, including trials of EV trucks and the adoption of Euro 6 engines.
  • Improve energy efficiency at our sites through smart lighting, solar energy scoping, and renewable energy sourcing.
  • Minimise waste through comprehensive recycling programmes across our UK operations.
  • Empower customers with transparent, accredited carbon reporting via our partnership with Pledge/Blue Yonder.

How do your customers rate your sustainability commitment?
Customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Many businesses today are actively seeking logistics partners who can support their own sustainability goals. Our ability to provide detailed, accredited emissions reports and offer greener transport options has strengthened customer trust and deepened long-term relationships.

Do environmentally friendly/emission-free transports also play a role for you in international general cargo transportation?
Yes, they do. Europa Worldwide Group is one of the largest commercial users of the Eurotunnel, which significantly reduces CO₂ emissions compared to ferry transport. Upon customer request, we offer Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a low-carbon alternative to diesel and currently inset operate with HVO for several key customers. We have also trialled electric trucks and believe that significantly more investment is needed in this technology. While scaling zero-emission transport across borders presents challenges, we remain committed to expanding these solutions as infrastructure and technology continue to evolve.
